From the Archives: Murder at the Gallop (1963)

Margaret Rutherford made four wonderful Miss Marple mysteries in the 1960s and, of them all, Murder at the Gallop (1963) is the best. This one takes place at a riding establishment and features a delightfully eccentric lot of suspects including Robert Morley, Flora Robson, and Katya Douglas.

Is that Vivian Vance?? It certainly is! And she is standing besides none other than Charles Laughton. Jane Wyman has an expectant look on her face which, if you have seen the film, you probably know why.... personally, I have not watched the film yet, so I don't know what this scene is about but it looks like an interesting movie.

Watch that coffee, stewardess!! Evidently, Jane Wyman didn't watch Fate is the Hunter otherwise she would have known not to bring coffee into the cockpit! Oh wait, that movie wasn't released until thirteen years after this film, I guess she is excused.  Three Guys Named Mike is exactly what you would expect from such a title - one woman debating about the three men in her life all named Mike. One of them is played by the always dependable Howard Keel (right).

This mini lobby card is from the romantic-drama Come Fly With Me (1963) starring Dolores Hart, Hugh O'Brian, Carl Boehm, and Pamela Tiffin. If the Frank Sinatra song pops into your head whenever you read that title, you'd be surprised to discover that it is actually another crooner who sings that famous tune over the credits - Frankie Avalon.

Joan Crawford always looked elegant, particularly so in MGM's Torch Song (1953) where she plays Broadway star Jenny Stewart. Sitting next to her is another elegant actor - Gig Young. I always considered him a secondary actor until I realized just how many films he made from the 1940s-1960s, often in leading parts. He's always great to watch.

Every year on the day before we take our Christmas tree down, we watch The Moon-Spinners (1964). It's such a lovely tradition and I don't even recall how it started, but this is one of my favorite scenes in the film. Nikki (Hayley Mills) and Mark (Peter McEnery) spend the night in the ruins of a Greek temple inhabited by stray cats. In the morning, they meet the helpful Anthony Gamble (John Le Mesurier).

Walter Pidgeon and his group of submarine sailors head down into deep waters in the 1961 action-adventure film Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, produced by 20th Century Fox. In this scene, Robert Sterling and John Litel share Walter Pidgeon's concern that the Earth will burn up and sync their watches as the Seaview races to launch a rocket to blow up the Van Allen belt before the Earth is destroyed.
